Ask the Right Questions About Irrigation, Especially During Drought

By Kerry Harrison
Extension Engineer

Probably the worst time to try to learn about an irrigation system is during a drought.

However, recent dry weather in the state may have you thinking about installing an irrigation system. Whether you are a large farmer or a homeowner, an irrigation system is a major investment and decisions should not be based on price alone.

You need to ask questions about what is being proposed for your conditions and make certain that you understand how the system is supposed to perform. Irrigation plans are not all inclusive.

Two publications where you can find help with questions you should be knowledgeable about are Bulletin 882 entitled “Factors to Consider in Selecting a Farm Irrigation System” (from your county extension office) and Bulletin 894 entitled “Irrigation for Lawns & Gardens” (also available at your county extension office.
