Termite Basics The complex social structure of termites and their hidden lifestyle make them difficult to study. It is generally believed there are three species of termites, but recent research has found evidence of as many as six species. Once hatched, a single termite, depending on what the colony needs to survive, can develop into many types of termites. It can become a worker, develop mandibles and become a soldier, or continue into the adult stage, grow wings and become a swarmer. It can continue to grow from this stage and become a king or queen, or it can lose its wings and return to the worker stage. |
